> He's out surfing...on the Big Island.
Actually, this Mike R. is sitting at the computer looking out at a HUGE
storm with waves bashing the bulkhead and spraying salt water on the Midget.
The last time we had a storm like this, the waves got behind the bulkhead,
washed out a lot of sand, and burst a big section of it outward because the
25-year-old steel rods to the deadmen had rusted through - a very expensive
repair. Also, I have bowls out on the window sill upstairs because in winds
this strong, coming from just the right angle (once or twice a year), water
is blown uphill under the flashing and leaks onto my stash of new parts for
the BE (kept inside instead under the house with the used parts in the salt
spray) - another very expensive repair for better weather. The wind is so
strong that the water in the toilets is sloshing. Meanwhile, my wife is
playing violin loudly 3' away from my right ear - fiddling while the toilets
slosh.
So yes, I would surely rather be on the Big Island surfing instead of on
Long Island sloshing.
I called my sister on the Big Island at the time the tsunami from Chile was
supposed to hit Hilo. She can't see the Bay from her house, but was
watching TV cameras set up along the shore and was unable to see anything at
all when it passed. There used to be many near-shore restaurants in Hilo
with mud lines painted across their windows at 5-7' from various tsunamis.
Other smaller buildings were simply carried away. I don't know if any of
those mud lines remain.
The other Mike R. is on the radio advertising something. I didn't buy any.
