[Spridgets] How can I determine if my 5-speed is good prior to

Is there ANY way to test a 5-Speed prior to installation?  Can I get an old 
clutch disk and turn it in each gear?  What do you look for prior to installing 
a 5-speed without knowing that it's a good tranny?
