It is easy to forget this! It is certainly more true of third world
countries than here.
We built our house on the cheap with cash in a time when interest rates were
18+%, moving in the day we got toilets (no showers) and adding more every
time be accumulated another $500. Much of the finish work we did outselves.
We have been paying for this ever since in repairs and replacements. But
the fact is, had we not done it this way, we could not have afforded it at
all for many years thereafter. And we ended up with a mortgage-free house,
so the repair cost were minor compared to long-term interest costs.
