After talking to Peter and thinking "why not?" (some of the best and worst times of my life have started with that phrase), for the very first time in maybe 15 tries, the "grease and input shaft" trick worked for pilot bushing removal. The grease did not go on my person or all over the shop as previous attempts over the years. The bushung cracked into 35 pieces or so and was a pain to clean up, but I'll call it a success.
