I can now say that it is definitely possible to add or replace valve stem
seals without removing the head or rocker shaft. The soft nylon rope stuffed
in the cylinder and then compressed tightly by rolling the car a bit in gear
held the valve up nicely, and once the keepers are popped out, the springs
could be removed from beneath the rocker arm by rolling the car back a bit to
lower the valve. Popped on the seals, put the springs and cap back in place,
nudged the car to bring the valve back up tight and used a big screwdriver to
compress the springs and add the keepers. It took an hour. The ordered head
gasket goes on the shelf for next time.
Now its back to test-and-tune minus the blue cloud.
