Ah, Lakers!
There were two ways to do those... One was to have plates bolted
to the ends of the side pipes. When ready to do a run a Muroc (or
other dry lake) one would open them up. .. The Street guys left
the ends open but had a bypass mechanism inside the car.
As an aside I believe that Lake Muroc is now part of Area 51. If
it's where the Burning Man is held on Labor Day weekend.
