Too late for this car, I think. It's in Ontario, Canada now. When it was
coming across the border I had 2 options. Scrap title ( no possibility of
ever getting on the road again ) or something along the lines of a 'salvage
title' which gave me the possibility of restoring it at some point. I paid
a bit extra (tax?) to keep my options open.

There are ways of "cleaning" a salvage title.

It involves getting it titled in certain states and then back to your home
state. Unfortunately, I don't remember the details of which state to do
this in. I "think" IL was one of them. This is also old info and things
may have tightened up a bit since then.

I didn't have to bid on my 'B back in '79. I had first right of refusal. I
don't remember the details of the conversation, but I do remember saying
something to the effect of "hey, it's MY car until we settle and I'm not
letting it go".

Titles have changed a lot over that time frame. I do have a US RWA in my
garage with a 'salvage' title. I was told that it might have to go through
a "special" safety check, in addition to the regular one, if I ever wanted
to put it on the road again.

Never a good idea to let the insurance company "total" your car, then
buy it back from them. First of all, you will have to bid on it, to get
it back, which can be expensive. Then, when you do get it back, and
repair it, the car will be issued a "Reconstructed" title, which is
fine, if you intend to keep it forever, but very bad if you ever plan to
sell it. A "Reconstructed" title means you take a big hit, in resale
value.
