One of the two roller shutter doors on the front of my garage at home is
powered using a spring loaded counterbalence system in the middle of the
roller along with the motor. In the event of a power failure a handle
disconnects the motor from the door and you can operate it by lifting and
pulling down by hand. It has a 'bump and lift' system if it gets stopped
part way down. I can stand underneath it and let the door hit my shoulder
and it will stop and lift without any pain (I don't test it often!).
Father-in-laws garage door is a spring assisted 'up and over' powered system
using cogs and a chain. This too has a little red handle to disconnect the
chain from the door. That can be hand lifted.
My mothers garage door is a multi panel slide to the side opening thing that
has toothed cogs at the top and is a real pain as the doors tilt as it opens
and the slightest thing on the bottom track wedges it. It is an older
1950's or 60's system and is outdated and probably the top track has dropped
slightly. That's why her car tends to stay outside!
Mine and father-in-law's have a remote transmitter using a 10 two position
dip switch thing on mine and an 8 triple position on father in law's. There
are push button operating switches in the garage. Mothers is a key switch
on the external garage wall and a red and green button switch inside.
Now the burglars know what we have, they are all alarmed and if they can get
mother's to work she would be greatful.
The old works roller shutter door was decent and would open when a car
approached (radar system) on the inside and this was repeated for vehicles
coming from outside but this could leave a bit of a security gap. They also
had keypad operation and a chain and pulley system for when they failed.
There is the odd one or two powered door in the UK. <smile>

ps Many powered gates have a hydraulic systems that are modelled on
Spridget hydraulics. That's why they don't work very well.
