Wow! Our dealership provides a loaner, free of charge, if they can't
complete the work on schedule. They've been VERY good to us, and we get
the same treatment, with our 9 and 10 year old VWs that we got from them
when we bought the cars new.
I agree, the maintenance is expensive. I'm getting ready to schedule
our Passat in for CV joint service (boots starting to crack). We'll
also have a couple of minor-but-annoying electrical issues looked into.
I'm expecting to spend close to a thousand bucks, this time (I'll have
some routine service stuff done, at the same time). But, I find it's
far cheaper to keep up with the maintenance than to pay for the repairs
caused by lack of maintenance. I mean, I wouldn't have to think twice
about jumping in the Passat and driving across the country.
I've driven the Japanese stuff (mainly Subaru), and, while they've
gotten pretty good; they're still not as much of a "driver's car" as the
VWs.
Of course, if I weren't married, and didn't need to go to work every
day, no matter what the weather; I'd drive nothing but pre-'75 MGs, and
air-cooled VWs. There's something I find very appealing about a car
that doesn't have to go anywhere but MY garage for service and repairs.

My wife has an '02 Passat wagon. It's a great driving car; one of the
best
in the snow I've ever driven. But the maintenance is killing us. Every
little thing. And some hum-dingers too.
Like the Monsoon sound system stopped working. Take the car in to the
dealer for the day. Go back and notice the headliner is down and the
whole
interior of the car is spread around the shop. "Can't finish today.
And by
the way, we have to replace the entire antenna "system". $500.
Never again.
