Do you have the mounts reversed? L/R?
I usually leave the metal part of the steering wheel side bolted to the
car, undo the other metal part from the body. Keep both rubber mounts
bolted to the metal parts and lower the engine in place.
Once it's close, bolt on the passenger mount loosely to the engine then
lower it and bolt it to the car. The steering side should drop onto the
rubber mount with a minor bit of persuasion.
But if the metal parts are reversed, you'll be cursing all night long.
