Now that you mention it, I never bought one, either. The best mower I
ever had was given to me by a friend. He was upset that his teenage
son ran it without oil and blew the motor. It was a Snapper rider.
So, I got a great mower with a blown motor and the teenager got to use
a push mower. I spent $300 on a new 10 HP motor delivered and used
that mower for years. Later, when the friend's teenage son was grown
and moved out, we moved into a nicer place and my kids were old enough
to mow. Now my kids get to push (self propelled, actually) and my old
friend has the Snapper back, running great.
The second best mower I ever had was an orange Ariens that my
paw-in-law decided was worn out. He bought it new when I was in
college and I used it to cut his grass. He took it in for service and
they talked him into a new Toro. The old Ariens was still way better
than the new Toro but he like the Toro's push handle propulsion
control. We had moved away and he was back to mowing his own lawn.
For a while we had the Snapper rider and Ariens self propelled at the
same time. It was quite a lawn slaying fleet.
Cheers,
Derf
