Hello James,

       for now, remove the shifter "can".. it's held in with four
       screws.. .. and enjoy the car... until  you can....

       modify the shift lever or

       what i did was buy another generic boot that fits the hole, and
       obtained a boot ring from a 1500 midget to hold it down the
       generic boot......  or

       turn the shifter can around backwards... i've seen that work as
       well... ... .. or

       cast the original can in fiberglass, or weld back in a piece
       where the hole is, .. and cut a new hole where you need it...
