The "whack with a hammer" method will work.  Have one person sit in
the car and pull the wheel toward the wheel and carefully whack the
shaft with BFH.  Don't hammer on the threads.  Screw the nut on the
end of the shaft to protect the threads.
I'd still go to HF and see what kind of cheap pullers they have.  A
medium sized two- or three- jaw should pop it off easily.  Something
like this:
