That's interesting. I'd never heard of any major issues. I'll have to
make some inquiries. I HAVE been disappointed in VW for doing away with
the 10 year/100,000 mi power train warranty. My '98 Golf has had NO
"issues" in the 213,000 miles I've had it, other than a starter and a
broken distributor cap retaining clip. Our '99 Passat had a few
problems, under warranty (ABS control unit, a couple of mass air flow
units), but it's been rock solid for the past several years (110,000
miles).
I think most US market VWs are now assembled in Brazil. That's kind of
scary, and I wonder if that might have something to do with it. My Golf
was assembled in Mexico and the build quality is excellent. I'm shocked
by how well that little bugger is put together.
I'm curious as to what components you've had problems with, and how VW
has responded to it.
