I'm just finishing rebuilding a Datsun trans and found a nice trick to get the
bearings on and off with minimum effort. To remove, freeze the entire
assembly in the home freezer. Then whip it out of the freezer, heat the
center ring of the bearing with a propane torch until its pretty hot (about 2
min., keep the flame off the shaft), and then tap it off the still-cold shaft.
To replace, freeze the shaft, put the new bearing in the toaster oven at 350
for 10 min and then just drop it over the shaft and give it a light tap. Sort
of like the BBQ flywheel starter ring trick, but not so hot as to hurt trans
parts but still enough difference in temps to make things go real slick. I
did the whole thing with just a few taps compared to the usual
screwdriver/prybar/hammer marathon.
