Hi.
As far as I know only epoxy needs to be topcoated within a week.Since epoxy
doesn't need sanding, just a scuff and cleaning to get dust nibs off will
do, then prime with a surfacer. Let it sit as long as you want, the longer
the better to thoroughly cure and shrink. Than when ready, clean and block
sand.You can do it in sections, I'll do a fender, hood etc. then while the
primer is curing, work on another panel. It's more manageable that way and
the Sprite is so small it's easy to set them up get a lot done quickly.
I've been using direct to metal primer lately to eliminate the epoxy step,
just strip to steel, clean, treat with metal conditioner if you want, then
prime, block sand and paint. I've also had very good luck with polyester
primer which builds fast and cures with very little shrinkage.
I think I used six quarts of paint on my Sprite and at least 6 quarts of
primer, inside and out. Of course that includes painting the tub and two
fenders twice because I wasn't satisfied with the coverage. It was pretty
banged up too so required a lot of priming and block sanding.
