while electronic gauges have made leaps and bounds in their quality over
the laast 20 years i'm a huge fan of a mechanical gauge . evryone has a
brand they prefer and reccomending "VDO" OVER "SUN" OR "WHAT EVER" is quite
a personal issue. no manufacturer has a "perfect" record in manufacturing
, wich will yeild a "it broke and never worked right" response from
somebody somewhere no matter what brand will be reccomended to you! my
personal reccomendation is no brand name but a brand that is widely used
and distributed like stewart warner or VDO or a similarly high profile well
known / recognised brand! be carefull attempting to buy a gauge at a
chain auto parts store that bears a well known name! there is a very good
chance that is a lower end gauge in their range of models! check on line
the manufacturer's available range of gauges as well as the range of
pressure it is designed to read! a fresh motor with "good" oil on a cool
day can easily exceed some gauges range and destroy or ruin the calibration
of the gauge(or rupture it leaving a nice mess on your lap and floor!)!
be a well educated buyer and choose a model that will properly serve your
application and you will be rewarded with a once and done purchase and
installation! also if it's not a "i gotta have one RIGHT NOW!", flea
market shopping can yeild some really good deals in used race car parts
too! ;) (i'm using a 3.00 VDO tach i found at a import carlisle a few
years ago in my race car!)
