But I've heard people make that argument.
When I fly in somewhere and rent a car, I always reserve a subcompact.
I get to my destination and go to the counter and invariably i learn
that I have been "upgraded" into some medium-sized car or worse. I
point out that I consider this a downgrade, and want some money taken
off the rate.
Everyone wants a bigger vehicle. What the hell for? Do they get up and
walk around while they are driving? Hold barn dances? I don't get it.
It's not because I'm a treehugger. I want a small turning radius, the
smaller the better. I want to be able to park in the smallest space. If
I have to get out and push the vehicle for whatever reason, I want to
know that I can push it, even up a slight grade if necessary.
In one trip in my GTI, I was able to transport: a six-inch jointer, a
computer, four sheets of 4' X 8' X 3/4", and 80 board feet of birds-eye
maple. There's hardly anything I can't move in the thing, and when I
find something that's too big I rent a truck for a couple of hours.
There are legitimate reasons for people to have pick-up trucks and
SUVs, and I accept that. But 9 out of 10 of these vehicles on the
highway are there for one reason and one reason only: to look big. I
have a cat who fuzzes her fur to look big, but she's not too bright and
that's all she can think to do. I expect it from a cat, but humans are
supposed to be a higher order of mammal.
