The analogy I used when replying to the original post was between a  1950's 
TV set and a modern one.  The 1950's version may have worked fine for many 
years and still may produce a good picture but, for a little more realism 
and seeing as a life may depend on it, let's go for the patch.....  You may 
find a cross ply (or the tyre that conned the US for years, a bias belted) 
tyre, was good enough for plugs but the modern radial uses patches.  Call it 
a retrograde step if you wish, just like fuel injection is a retrograde step 
from the carb.  (Smile)
