And so, John asks: "How can crankshaft thrust washers in the engine screw up the transmission?" Anticipating this question, I answer: "If the crankshaft has too much endplay, it takes away from the effective throw of the trowout bearing (because the crankshaft, flywheel and pressure plate can all move forward when you hit the clutch). Thus, your clutch won't properly disengage."
