oil gauge pipe

I've got a pinhole in my pressure pipe for the oil pressure gauge if anyone
has any tips (or a good one in their back pocket), just found it last night.
I also recall reading something about  a leather washer being required to keep
oil from puking out of the union behind the gauge, any details?
