Some info on the rib case trannies:
There are two different gear sets for the rib case trannies. The changeover was
somewhere around February of 1965. If you use parts from different cases, match
them first. Count the teeth!
The "synchronizers" are brass or bronze baulking rings. Just replace them with
new... They have little tiered ridges on the inside face that actually catch
and when worn, they don't catch.
The layshaft has a straight cut first gear that normally gets chipped and
excessively worn. Inspect it closely. The first and reverse gear rings are also
straight cut. They get damaged too. The worse the wear, the more whining that
you will hear in 1st and reverse.
The layshaft also wears. Inspect it for wear and replace if worn. The needle
bearings should just be replaced.
The tailshaft has a bushing that usually never gets replaced during a rebuild.
Just replace it too.
It helps if you have small hands and two on each wrist but it can be done. The
manuals have pretty good step by step directions bo pay attention and good luck!
The differentials seem to always have a lot of slop but they don't break too
often.
