Should there be a washer under the castle nut on top of the king pin? My
Sprite has a bronze washer on one side and no washer on the other. The
king pins are not drilled for cotter pins either. Also should there be a
washer under the castle nut on the top trunnion pin? Gary '61 Sprite
=========
Gary,
There should be a bronze thrust washer that fits inside the upper
trunion
which acts as a bearing surface between the trunion which is motionless,
and the stub axle which turns. It should be soaked in oil, as it's oilite
(a schmear of grease helps too). There are shims added to the top of the
shoulder on the kingpin, and this sets the endfloat of the stub axle to the
trunion. No shims usually yield a very tight stub. Too many, too loose. You
should save them from the old assembly as they are not easily obtainable.
(I DO know someone who has them;)
As to the nut..... The castelated should be used to set your endfloat
as
you can run it on and off until the shims are right. After that is set, use
the nyloc for final assembly. The nyloc is best used once only. There is no
washer under the nut. The trunion doesn't turn.
