Folks,
As was checking my mail in a hurry during a break at work this morning...
and I deleted by mistake a message from one of you chaps who wanted to know
what I had to do to get my car to street-legal specs - sorry - it's somebody
with a racing MGB.
As far as I know:
Lights and turn signals have to go back on. All I have now is brake lights.
I do have the original lights. I will need to put the charging system back
in too. I do have the original parts, even though the generator seems to be
from a newer car. Might go to a generator set up anyways.
Windscreen is a debatable point, quite a few folks with Lotus Sevens drive
around with "Brookland screens" and obviously no wipers, and they have not
been bothered by the law. I do have the Bugeye original windscreen and
wipers/wiper motor.
To make it drivable, I would have to ditch the race engine (12 to 1
compression ratio), straight-cut gears, and welded axle. I will probably go
for an overbore 1275 with Datsun gearbox. Bought a set-up kit from Paul
Asgeirsson some time ago, changed my mind and sold it. Also sold the 1275
+20 and Datsun transmission I had. Seems I'll have to do it all over again!
Don't know about rear axle yet. I do have spare 3.9 and 4.22 open diffs. I
just might fit something stronger than the original Sprite item, preferably
with LSD.
I do have a muffler to replace the megaphone.
I think that's it? Technically, the race harness would have to go too (not
DOT approved), but there again I could drive it legally without belts! Not
that I would be keen on doing that!
