Well there we have it. One new voltage stabiliser later, and my car is suddenly appearing to run at (or just under) normal. Also, my fuel gauge doesn't read full for the first 80 miles of a tank! Thanks a million those of you who suggested this could be the problem. You have saved me much pain, trying to diagnose a renovated and apparently hot cooling system. The car got a great test yesterday. What should have been a 45 minutes journey home was turned into a 3 hour one, as the North Circular (big road around London) was closed! I'm pleased to report that she didn't bat an eyelid! I have invented a new game for such occasions, it's called "Drum or Disc", and basically you have to look at cars crawling by in other lanes, and decide what sort of brakes are at the rear. Sad, me?
