The thick side of the inner BEARING faces in and the thick side of the outer
BEARING faces out. It is the outer race of both that is thick on one side and
thin on the other. A cross section of the assembly, in words:

Outside of wheel......[thick side of outer bearing...thin side of outer
bearing]....shims/spacer.....[thin side of inner bearing.....thick side of
inner bearing].....oil seal.....inside of wheel

OK, the "thick" side of the inner race faces in and the "thick" side of the
  outer race faces out, right?
