I finally got time to go a little further into my stuck in first sprite
problem. I still would like to drive it around while I save up for the
5speed conversion. Which by the way seems to be better for the
"fabricatingly challenged" than are the other options, although that
big ole Toyota dual overhead cam job looks like fun.
I removed the Gaiter retaining plate, Gaiter and draught excluder
(sheesh, looked like the shifter housing and rubber do dad to me.) I
think some parts are missing. Like the thrust button and spring.
Looking down into the hole left by removing the shifter I see the
socket that the ball joint of the shifter fits in. In my previous Q&A
someone said, stick a big screwdriver in the socket and gently
manipulate the socket forward by pulling back on the giant screwdriver.
Translating that to "stick the biggest steel rod you can find into the
socket and pull the crap out of it" I am wondering if that is the
spirit of the procedure. If that does not work then I move on to
removing the side plate and trying to apply pressure there.
Where? There! Right? If giant manipulating rod does not work: Once I
have the side plate off I'll report back for the next installment.
All of this of course is pre requisite to pulling it all out and
refinancing my house to buy a 5 Speed and conversion kit. Yah, I know
it's not that expensive, but I am a school teacher ya know.
cheers, bill b.
