The starter on my '72 works flawlessly. It engages, turns,
and starts the car every time .... except when someone else
is watching. Then it does it's Lucas shtick It doesn't grind.
Not ever. It just seems to jump right back out of the ring
gear and spins. It's not like it begins to start and then
kicks out. No. Never even sounds like it has engaged.
There's a slight hesitation, and then the spin. Next try
it always catches and starts right up- but by then the audience
has left muttering epithets against all LBCs.
I've checked both the ring gear and the
pinions, and the both look really good. The starter is
only a couple years old.
Is this just something to live with?
