Air conditioning- NO specific LBC information

I need some advice about automotive air conditioning. The Miata I'm 
parting out has AC and I'd like some advice on what to do to remove 
the system safely and so it can be re-used in another vehicle. I'd 
like to pull the engine this weekend and like to clear this part 
first. Is there a do-it-yourself way to deal with removing the 
refrigerant or do I need to hire someone to do it?
