Hi Bill,
The micro adjustment at that point, assuming everything is free and working
right is supposed to me wher you can zero in the timing mark. Can'r recall,
but it seems that there were 24 clicks, or maybe 12 to a degree change in
timing.
As for the 8 degrees BTDC at 600 RPM, this is just a reference point.
Usually you are supposed to have the vacuum line disconnected from the
vacuum advance unit, if there is one, and plugged. Without a chart for that
particular dizzy, you won't know what the advance is supposed to be on that
dizzy.
Being too far advanced will typically produce piston "holing" and broken
ceramic tips on the plugs from excessive pinging, along with a drop off in
power. None of those are desirable!!!
Too far retarded will usually bring on overheating beyond what the cooling
system can handle and a big loss of power.
With an electronic ignition setup, you can zero it in with just a little
fiddling and then never need touch it again as it will essentially never
waver from that point again.
Some things that might need to be addressed with your dizzy are these. Is
the breaker plate free and the weights and springs operational? Is the
vacuum advance diaphragm working or stuck? Is there much wobble to the
dizzy shaft?
I'm sure you'll get lots of help from the listers on this, but this is a
pretty good overview.
