I know it's been a few days, but I haven't had the chance to check my email
much lately.

Interesting site Chris.
One could spend alot of time searching around that site. I don't intend to
go into a whole diatribe.....
There are tons of charts and graphs and papers.
LEV does mean something. There are basically 6 levels of certification.
Tier 1 emisions is the basic level. LEV is in the middle and ZEV is the
highest. Which is a farce, it only applies to electric vehicles and they
have to get power from somewhere. But the power plants that produce that
electricity don't count. The government keeps exempting them from cleaning
up their act, because it would be tooooo costly to them!!..... But that's
another story.
" today's vehicles are significantly cleaner than in the past"
As far as the numbers go,
"A higher score number means a vehicle is designed to emit less air
pollution than a vehicle with a lower number. For instance, a vehicle with a
score of 4 is cleaner than a vehicle with a score of 1, but not necessarily
four times cleaner. "

Some of the vehicles I find interesting, especially SUV's. All of the V8
Toyota/Lexus's got 0. Volswagens Touregg (sic) The v6 got 8, the v8 a 3 and
the Diesel which gets better mileage and is one of the most technically
advanced in the world, got a big fat 0. Even the car engine diesel which
gets some of the best fuel mileage of any vehicle only gets a 4.

What's weird is that the GMC Envoy and it's 6 cylinder siblings in the
medium size range get 8's ,but the longer wheelbase versions are classified
as large and with the EXACT same powertrain got 7's. The V8's only got 3's.
Weird.
Anywho,
I don't mean this to sound like a rant, but the point is that all of today's
cars put out many TIMES less pollutants that those of even just 10 years
ago. And I'm sorry even the best tuned Spridget puts out much more pollution
than today's cars.

And I wouldn't have it any other way!!!

A "LEV" certification doesn't mean much.

If you want to drive an SUV, the Expedition is about as bad a polluter as
you're going to find in the market right now, scoring a 3 out of 10, where
higher numbers are better. The only Ford product that's worse is the
Excursion, which only gets a 2. The Explorer at least scores a 7.

FWIW The GMC Envoy scores an 8 out of 10.

Now consider that the vast majority of trips made by SUVs could be made just
as well by far smaller vehicles. According to the EPA, the only small car
that scores as badly as an Expedition is a Lotus Europa V8. Maseratis and
Ferraris score 6es, and what we tend to think of as economy cars score 8s
and
higher.

All this is according the the EPA's "Green Vehicle Guide" at:
