Good Morning and Happy New Year!
This morning I was going to write about how after 5 years off the road my
Dad and I managed to finally get my 74 midge MG running, tuned to the point
of smoothly idling and the result of a neighborhood cruise with a sh@t
eating grin on my face. That part was awesome!
But now I have to switch topics a bit and ask why my jets are leaking???
After rebuilding the carbs myself, and then taking them apart and
reassembling, twice, I thought that I had finally traced the problem to the
rear replacement jet. I9d spent several days trying to bring the carbs
under control. As it turns out the silver aluminum disk that connects the
brass jet to the plastic body had a leak on the plastic side. It didn9t
leak when the motor was running, but it didn9t run and idle well either. My
guess is that it was drawing air in through that hole and gushing fuel into
the carb. I9ll be calling APT tomorrow.
Anyways when I pulled that and replaced with the old one, the leak went
away, it tuned up as I was expecting/hoping and I was able to take my
neighborhood cruise. When I shut off the jet bodies were bone dry and
behaving.
Well, dammit, a couple of hours later that new (old) jet had leaked as well,
and the forward one also (though it is mostly just wet and not dripping).
What could be going one here? It makes no sense to me why it would start
leaking all of a sudden. Can the system be overpressurising and pushing
fuel above the jet level? The carbs are plumbed to the carbon canister,
which is not plugged and is plumbed to just before a new tank where it just
exits to the air.
I can provide more details if needed, but I9m totally flummoxed down here in
Chapel Hill.
