I've got the opportunity to pick up a running 1275 and tranny from a '69
Spridget for a "good price". Engine was in and working well. Described as
minor oil usage, smokes a"little" on startup and hard acceleration. All of a
sudden after extended 200 miles Xway trip, engine has started consuming a quart
of oil every 100 miles, no apparent leakage and no extraordinary smoking. Oil
Pressure stays steady at 60 psi. No external major puddles under car. Any
guesses as to cause? No idea on mileage or if compression test has been done.
I'm betting time for a rebuild on this one but tranny is described as excellent.
Engine and tranny were replaced with a built 1340 and a 5 speed from a wrecked
Spridget. Therefore P.O. doesn't need any more.
For the "good price" do I pick this one up as a spare for the smoothcase tranny
that is in Bugsy that sometimes doesn't want to downshift into 3rd gear. -I
think yes on that one.
Ratios are supposed to be better and I'm running a 3.9 rear end. Also present
speedo bounces all over the place due to I believe worn drive gear / loose gear
inside the tranny.
The 1098 in Bugsy has been rebuilt and runs quite strong. Am I going to get
much more out of the 1275 as is. Doubtful is my opinion and maybe even less
than I've got now. Is this engine a good source for rebuilding and Vizardizing
over the next few years - My gut says yes.
Ideas, advice, and opinions are welcome.
