And the thrust washers are notoriously weak on the 1500 motor, and are
known for wearing and dropping into the sump. Ask Larry Macy!
Electric fuelpumps were not factory on the 1500, so you may need a
regulator, as many others have suggested.

It's also true that depressing the clutch reduces the drag on the
starter
motor, but it also puts a lot of pressure on pretty dry thrust washer.
Take
your choice, I guess as to what does the most damage. Starters are
cheap!
