steering column

in reading another email someone mentioned their bugeye steering wheel/column
is not parallel with the vehicle...in my case the left side of the steering
wheel is closer to the cowl than the left side...why???? I have other things
that are off to the side but...it has been many many years...but really whats
the deal???
