I'm not sure who suggested a loose intake manifold as the source of Bugsy's
problems with first not idling and then after a blast down the expressway
having revs climb first at 2500 and then up to 3500 rpm. Blipping the throttle
would sometimes make the idle come down but not always. I topped off the damper
fluid and this seemed to help initially but was still having a problem. Took
dashpots off and cleaned needles, helped a little but still problem after
running at speed. Took top of floats off and applied gumout directly. Though it
helped only to have hi idle speeds after engine got hotter.
Now I should have noticed that exhaust note was louder but with a glasspack on
there he's not very quiet anyway. I've been cogitating on this problem of
idling too slow, idling too fast all weekend. I totally dismissed loose intake
manifold as a possible cause. How could the intake manifold possibly be loose.
That's too obvious there must be some dark secret causing this to occur.
Got out the trouble lamp and started messing around the hood. Took off air
cleaners determined to try and find a vacumn leak. Was convinced that something
on carbs was loose. Gave a tug on bottom of front carb and the whole intake
manifold moved. Not a little, a whole lot. Middle bolts on intake manifold were
almost completely off. Now how Bugsy stayed running is beyond me. I tightened
up all bolts and amazingly problem went away. Still having a small leak around
front carb / manifoild to engine block seal. Looks like what I'll assume is a
paper gasket still has a small air leak and I'll need to replace. But compared
to the way things were before it's way, way, better.
So whoever it was that suggested the "obvious" problem my hat is off to you.
Unfortunately the monsoon conditions curently in Dayton have precluded taking
Bugy for a proper test drive but I'm curious to how he'll really perform now
that the idling problem is resolved. Thanks again to all of your help and
advice.
