Whoa, whoa....
Road & Track...different applications.
Those oil-less, springless, valve open
numbers are track only items...not fit
for street conditions....
the track is WOT "on/off" stuff (more or less most nearly 99.9% of the
time).
For the street:
In the normal set-up, the valve action is
dependant upon engine vacuum balanced
by the need for mixture strength (viscosity
of oil) on acceleration (accelerator pump
action). Too "quick" valve action (thin or no oil) and performance
suffers as
the mixture goes lean on acceleration....
all air, little fuel!
Spring determines how much valve opens
at any given butterfly (throttle) setting.
Ideally, the air valve reaches it's full open
position at peak horsepower, usually a
little before redline (or thereabouts, more
or less).
"Oiless" in the case of the street application will cause LOSS of
acceleration/performance and erratic
running (air valve "flutter") in cruise
and possible back-fire through the carb(s)
under certain circumstances.
