steering wheel removal

This should be a simple matter but I have not been able to persuade the
steering wheel on my 79 come off.  I need to replace the turn signal switch
and Haynes book has not been much help since it just says to remove the nut
and lift away.  Have any of you found this problem and what has been your
solution?
