having been born and raised here in eastern pennsylvania , i learned to
navigate new jersey's traffic circles while learning to drink under age and
drive! (NJ age was 18 and at the time PA age was 21 to consume alcohol)
traffic circles were great fun as long as you were not too "impared" and got
lost going in circles! LOL!
i felt the traffic circles were rather manageable back then. but! back
then, most people used their signals, courtesy was the norm on the road as
opposed to today's exception and there were no pagers going off, cell phones
glued to the side of driver's heads either. now we are all guilty of
having a very "rosey" memory of the past. but i seem to remember the 70's
being a much more sane experience as far as driving is concerned compared
to today. yes i was a kid with 2 very fast cars! my 450HP 55 chevy and my
rocket ship bugeye were the cars of choice of that era for me. but still
i can remember even the elderly (who are constantly blamed for going 35 in
55 zones and driving the ramblers and vintage similar cars of that era where
all you saw was some "blue" hair and 2 hands above the top of the driver's
seat back) used their signals and some even still used "hand signals" (and
i do not mean flipping someone off!) when turning! now in spite of the
increased volume of vehicles i see nothing but discourtesy and some ungodly
horrible controll skills of drivers (driving near or at the posted speeds,
not even going into the mach 3 capeable road rockets being offered today
being piloted by kids with no driving skills trying to break the sound
barrier on the highways out there!) .
i do not think my being critical is based upon my driving race cars or the
fact i own some fast cars either. all that has done is give me some very
good instruction in defensive driving to protect myself from possible
situations i see unfolding ahead of me. i love to drive! i enjoy going
places and some times i think" i hope i make it there in one piece" and it's
not my ability i'm worried about but the abilities of those i must share the
road with.
chuck.
still shrinking! 237lbs now! (that's 216lbs lost so far!) i guess i'm
due for a list "how's this gastric bypass working" update soon. it's been
16 months since surgery. ...c. :)
