transmission input shaft

with the transmission out and the clutch removed, is it typical to be able to 
wiggle the input shaft up and down a tiny bit, or does that indicate a problem? 
 Mine doesn't seem to be leaking or anything but when you grab it it's not rock 
solid like I might expect, you can feel a little wiggle.  Any thoughts?
