God forbid, some may even pass away before that time comes.

Depends on when it is planned? I think I read that as "My attendence is
determined if I can arrange time to come to the event"

Sure Dave, pick a time that best fits you.
Look, it's a slim chance that any given one of us is going to win the car to
begin with. That is the realm of statistics. Out of our control.
However, the chance to see the completed car and to share the joy of the lucky
one that wins it is not totally out of our control. We have five years to
plan for that day.
Given the above, what should you focus on? Maximizing your slim opportunity to
win the car or achieving the difficult (but not impossible) task of attending
the event?
Now, if we follow your course of reasoning then the majority outcome for most
entrants in the lottery will be "Did'nt go to event" & "Did'nt win car" along
with a slim chance for those who make the effort to attend to "share the joy
of the winner".
