Where are you located? I will be picking up a 1970 Midget on Saturday whose
vented tank is probably ok. I am in the Chicago area, and used gas tanks are
not really shippable. The 1970 was really a strange beast, old enough to
have a dynamo, new enough to have negative earth; old enough to be SWA, new
enough for emissions; old enough for chrome bumpers, new enough for the
split rear bumper...
BTW, you can take that new tank to a radiator shop along with a fitting for
the hose (Pep Boys brass in my case) and have them braze it in. I did this
for my 73. I also ended up using a cutoff wheel in the dremel to dissect the
original hose fittings so that I could retain them for the rest of the
emissions hoses in the trunk since the rubber had perished on them (they
tended to dump fuel in the trunk at fill-up).
Alternatively, drill a couple of small holes through the sealing ring in the
gas cap to vent it and cap off the hose from the valve cover to the charcoal
cannister. Do make sure that your crankcase is either vented or has vacuum
applied via pcv valve to avoid excessive oil leakage.
