Bill...
Either the ignition system is breaking
down under load or....the fuel pump is
worn and not pumping up to snuff, the
fuel level in the bowls is on the low side or might you be running a
"non-vented"
fuel cap on an engine wherein the
emissions systems have been disabled?
Let me have my first cup of coffee here,
and we'll see what else we can think
of.
In the ignition system it can be something
as minor as a misfiring spark plug 'cause
somebody dropped it on the floor before
installation (BTDT). An oscilliscope picked up the "bad" plug. In terms
of
"feel" it ran fine except above 3500rpm
accelerating up a decent grade, then the
engine would begin to "miss" intermittently. IOW it would keep going
but stop accelerating, throttle position
notwithstanding.
In the case of running a non-vented cap
on an emissions dis-abled engine, the
feeling was a definite "running out gas"
and you had to definitely back off the
throttle and reduce the load (slow down)
to continue.
