in the old days of automatic transmissions with "rear pumps" when you could
push start an automatic, driveshaft removal was 100% needed for any speeds
over 10-15mph or the trans would hydraulically try to engauge and do some
serious damage internally.
with the spridget's tendancy to loose some lubricant due to controlled
seepage (see factory plan for rust proofing undercarage) the possibility of
having a dry gear box is very real. towing at any speed with little to no
lubrication would destroy the internal components! let alone the
possibility it could "jump" into a gear on bad bumps. it is far easier to
play it safe and unbolt the drive shaft than risk the possibility of ruining
a good component without lubrication. the end result could be a siezed
trans wich could be very-very exciting with locked rear wheels at speed!
not to mention the cost of rebuilding a gear box Vs. the time invested in
removing 4 bolts.

chuck.
sheesh! i got ta get to the florist and order something to be delivered to
my wife tomorrow while she is at work!!!
