n.b. One story about the smaller US Gallon is that the sailors who carried
the kegs of liquids (ale, spirits, ffodstuffs etc) across the pond used to
gather what they claimed as their share as it was transported to America.
This led the persons in America to accept a smaller amount as the correct
measure. I do not support this as being an acceptable explanation.
