Well, GM....

You want the actual maintainance check-
off sheet for the year, model and mileage - the one's provided by the
mfr.
and used by the mech's. on the actual job...the detailed one.

I'd love to see whether they mention
the tensioner (or idler) in terms of
inspection, etc. and what other items
might also be included under "Timing
Belt Change" (or replacement).

There must be some sort inspection,
compensation or possible adjustment
of the tensioner when going from an
old belt to a new one. Doesn't really
make logical sense that there would
not be.

Sure....I could be wrong.....but...!

You know, if we were talking failure
of a $20 item as a consequence it would
be one thing but we're not....and I hate
to see people get screwed. It would be
one thing if the car wasn't taken care of,
but taking Phil's word for it, this was
not the case in his case.

If maintainance on the idler isn't on the
mechanic's detailed work sheet provided
for the scheduled timing belt change,
then maybe it "should have" been.

As I stated previously...how come
Gerard knows about this and the Volvo
dealer doesn't? Should be exactly the
other way around considering it's 2003...
and the car is a 1998.

Volvo may not have known about it in
1999, but shortly thereafter there must
have been more than a couple of cars
who got the timing belt changed in
accordance with the published maintenance schedule who ran into
the same problem as Phil Vanner did,
reasonably shortly thereafter.

I'm sure God didn't single Phil out.....
Gerard knows. I wonder how many
more "Gerard's" there are out there in
this respect and how many more Volvo
owners having different models with
the same set-up as the '98 V70R have
run into the same situation.

Very expensive situation.
