When it comes to heating my garage, I still use the old torpedo
heater. Yes it is noisy and sometimes there is a smell, but with one
of the garage windows open it heats nicely. I spend most of my time
working in a t-shirt (and of course pants!)
Regardless of the heater you put in, my suggestion would be to, at a
minimum, put some insulation in the ceiling. You don't want an ice
dam to develop and cause more problems than you want to deal with.
