What you bought was a step in the right
direction.
The operator should be able to give you
a readout of what your current settings
are giving you in terms of torque and
horsepower with respect to mixture
strength (CO) and timing on acceleration
at about every thousand rpm up to just
before the cam "comes in", then at
500rpm increments right through redline.
If the operator is also an engine tuner
(the ideal situation) he will interpret the
readings over usually three runs and
give you recommendations for improvement in terms of changes in
mixture strength and/or timing
Best to show up with engine freshly
tuned as in valves adjusted, fresh plugs,
ignition system and timing checked and
set, carbs freshly tuned, etc. In this way
you'll be using your time effectively in
gaining information for improvements
rather than tuning the current set-up
to put it in proper shape for the "pulls"! :)
Bring a fresh pad and a few sharpened
pencils to take notes. It's usually a great
learning experience and will probably
make a believer out of you with respect
to dyno tuning as the way to go to get
the best from your application.
