Jack,
         No need to remove that pinion nut, unless you want bigger troubles 
(thereby making tomorrow worse).
         Time for a slide hammer. A rentable item. I don't recall if you 
have wire wheels or not. I've done the job several times where the axle 
brakes just inside of the diff carrier bearing and mushrooms so the axle 
wont come out, and significantly, neither will the diff!!
         I had a wire wheel car at the time I was teaching my GF to drive.. 
the only time I had my axles break... and I got a used knackered knock-off 
which I drilled for the slide hammer.  Not sure how to go about it with a 
disc wheeled car.
         Once the shaft came out, then I could pull the pig and the stubby 
bit fell out. The bearing seemed none the worse for the whacking it got 
when the mushroomed end of the shaft was squeezed through it. A little 
rinsing out of metal shards, reinstallation of pig and axle, and Bob's your 
uncle.
