I am dealing with the same problem, Goeff. My head gasket blew after the
engine overheated, AFTER the damned soldered joint on the brass overflow
tank, YET AGAIN decided to give up and blow out all my coolant.

I just had the head skimmed and leveled a year and a half ago, but now, when
I lay a straitedge along it, the straightedge rocks a little, indicating a
warp. So I will take the head in to the machine shop again to have a little
more shaved off to level it out. While it is there, I will have it
magnafluxed for cracks and boiled out to be sure the passages are clear.

The overflow tank, one of the dumbest ideas of English engineers, has been
soldered several times and holds up for a while, then when I gain confidence
that the repair is good, it gives way and blows out the coolant. I am
thinking about taking the pipe completely out and replacing it with a bit
larger copper pipe, drilling a new, tighter hole, and soldering the b****rd
once and for all.

Any help or input from anyone about soldering one of those tanks up,or any
problem with replacing the current overflow tank pipe with a copper one,
would be appreciated.
